Top 10 Most Dog-Friendly U.S. Cities

Your dog is a part of the family, so before you pack up for new horizons or for vacation check to see what is on the agenda for Fido. Fortunately, as of recent the United States is filled with dog-friendly metropolises.  In the last few years, many cities have taken the initiative to create a local environment that is suited to our canine companions. Here are the cities UGODOG has selected as top ten most dog-friendly in the United States.

1. Colorado Springs, CO

Colorado Springs has endless options for play, pampering, and outdoor adventure. The city is home to plenty of dog-friendly stores and over 10,000 acres of public park space, including several off-leash dog parks. When Fido isn’t feeling well, take him to one of over 110 veterinarians in the city.

Colorado Springs is well-known for its ties to nature and the great outdoors. There are plenty of hiking and walking trails get you and your pup closer to the beautiful Colorado landscape. After your hike, you can take a stroll through the Promenade Shops at Briargate or retire to the Broadmoor Hotel, a luxurious establishment that gives both humans and dogs the perfect five-star treatment.

2. Portland, OR

Portland is a pet lover’s paradise, offering a bevy of amenities and points of interest for your pup. The city is home to over 32 off-leash dog parks and hundreds of other pet services that include doggy day care, dog-sitters, trainers, veterinarians, groomers, bakeries, photographers, boutiques, boarders, and restaurants.

In fact, the overflowing pet-friendly atmosphere has led to a burgeoning pet business scene. From nutritionists to lawyers to massage therapists to even pet psychics, Portland has just about anything a dog could need.

3. San Diego, CA

The main draw to San Diego is the year-round temperate weather. The warm, always-70-something climate makes the city a veritable playground for dogs, and San Diego has an excellent selection of pet-friendly and off-leash beaches to take advantage of the fantastic weather.

La Jolla features several dog-friendly restaurants, giving you and your pup delicious local cuisine and picturesque seaside views. On a hot day, take Fido out for an ocean swim or a kayak excursion. Pet life jackets are provided!

4. Chicago, IL

Chicago is a beautiful city full of interesting people, without the overwhelming density or congestion that is characteristic of typical big city living. The Windy City has a ton of pet-friendly establishments, including outdoor cafes and bars. Many upscale hotels welcome dogs of all breeds and sizes, and several restaurants even offer complementary dishes for your pup.

Take Fido to see Lake Michigan, which features 18 miles of paved trails along its edge. Boat operators are more than happy to take you and your dog on a lake cruise as well.

5. Seattle, WA

For interesting history and beautiful scenery, take your dog on a trip to Blake Island State Park, the ancestral campground of indigenous Indian tribes and the supposed birthplace of Chief Seattle. Once you and your pooch have taken in the history and scenery, enjoy some fresh, delicious Chinook salmon around an open fire.

Downtown Seattle is home to various pet-friendly stores and establishments, such as Pensione Nichols Bed and Breakfast. Don’t be afraid to take the bus or trains in the city, well-behaved leashed dogs are allowed.

6. Austin, TX

This hip college town is a great place for dogs of all sizes. With twelve off-leash dog parks your pup plenty of opportunities to have fun and socialize with other dogs. The Bull Creek District Park is an especially popular spot as it features a natural creek for you and your dog to cool off.

Of course, Texas is best known for its barbecue. You and your dog are sure to enjoy delicious ribs, brisket, chicken, and all other meaty goodness throughout the city. Just make sure to save room for all-natural treats from Groovy Dog Bakery.

7. Boulder, CO

Boulder agrees that your dog is part of your family. When you want a pet of your own, instead of filling out paperwork that designates you as the animal’s owner, you become the legal guardian.

While Boulder might not have as many dog parks as Portland, your dog won’t run out of exercise opportunities. The city has over 144 miles of trails, many of which are open to off-leash dogs, though they must be responsive to voice and sight control. Remember to clean up after pup, of course.

8. Santa Cruz, CA

Santa Cruz is home to numerous off-leash parks and beaches like Mitchell Cove Beach, the key dog-friendly feature in Santa Cruz is the annual “Spring Dog Festival” held by the Coastal Dog Owners Group. This festival benefits area shelter animals and includes costume competitions, shows of skill and talent, and information regarding dog adoption, exercise, and general care.

9. Eugene, OR

Eugene features several gourmet pet boutiques and organic dog treat sellers along with numerous off-leash dog parks and events to maintain a healthy, balanced pup.

Eugene also holds the annual “Oregon Truffle Festival”, a food festival that features continental breakfasts, winery luncheons, and the “Grand Truffle Dinner”. The festival is dog-friendly and even runs professional truffle-hunting seminars for interested dogs and owners.

10. Long Beach, CA

Belmont Shore in Long Beach hosts several pet parades and dog beauty contests every year, including the “Easter” and “Howl-oween parades”. The most popular of contests is the “Most Beautiful Bulldog” competition, which brings contestants from all over the world.

An off-leash dog beach in LA County allows dog’s to get their much-needed exercise. All the stores along Second Street are pet-friendly and offer plenty of dog treats and bowls of cool water.

The U.S. is full of places that will treat your pooch just as hospitably as you. Whether you want to move to a new city or plan a vacation, any of the top ten cities listed here will show you both a great time or feel free to add your own.
